Who We Are
Reiterating Effective Knowledge of Non-discriminatory Efforts While Actively Learning (R.E.K.N.E.W.A.L.) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring safety, dignity, and stability for displaced youth experiencing crisis situations within Missouri’s foster care system. Founded with a commitment to trauma-informed care and equitable support, we work to ensure that every child has access to immediate protection, compassionate guidance, and a pathway toward healing.
Our work begins with the REKNEWAL Unity Home, the first phase of our long-term vision to create safe, family-centered environments for children in crisis. This initiative emphasizes reunification, emotional restoration, and the belief that Family 1st is not just a phrase — it’s a foundation for lifelong resilience.
The Challenge
Across Missouri, the need for emergency placement has reached a critical point. Children are entering the foster care system due to abuse, neglect, homelessness, and sudden family disruption at rates that outpace available resources.
-
Child Welfare agencies continue to face a shortage of safe, trauma-informed emergency shelters.
-
As of September 2025, approximately 1,700 children were awaiting adoption, marking a 2% increase from the previous year.
-
1% of children in care were documented as missing, leaving families and communities desperate for answers.
-
Media reports show youth sleeping in police stations, hospitals, and office buildings, enduring prolonged stays and unstable transitions that deepen trauma.
These conditions are not just statistics — they represent real children facing fear, uncertainty, and emotional distress. R.E.K.N.E.W.A.L. exists to change that reality.
The REKNEWAL Unity Home is designed to provide:
-
Immediate, safe emergency placement
-
Trauma-informed care and emotional support
-
Stability during transitions
-
Advocacy for reunification when possible
-
A nurturing environment that prioritizes dignity and belonging
Our goal is to expand this initiative to meet the growing needs of Missouri’s youth, ensuring no child is left without a safe place to rest, recover, and rebuild.
